Every few weeks Impact Hub Joburg is featuring some of our members who are creating impact in South Africa (and beyond!) to share their stories. Meet IREX. Here’s what they do and why they chose to work from our Rosebank location:
Can you tell us a bit about your organisation?
IREX is an international non-profit organization headquartered in Washington D.C with offices across the world. It is committed to building a more just, prosperous and inclusive world. IREX and its partners empower youth, cultivate leaders, strengthen institutions and extend access to quality education and information.
Across sub-Saharan Africa, IREX is implementing the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI)- Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF) on behalf of the U.S. Government. MWF attracts young professionals between the ages of 25 – 35 years old who complete an intensive leadership program in the U.S. with subsequent follow-on programming through IREX. The Fellowship forms part of IREX’s goal to cultivate leaders, thus our programming supports the Fellows through short-term practicums, mentorships and other interventions when they return home.
The IREX South Africa office provides programming support to Fellows across 14 countries in Southern Africa.
Why did you join Impact Hub Joburg?
IREX South Africa joined the Impact Hub because we sought to be in a centrally located and versatile venue that would be attractive to the young professionals and entrepreneurs we work with.
What’s the best thing about working at Impact Hub Joburg?
It has been ideal for us as we have access to the Hub’s spaces when we host meetings and being linked to the Hub’s activities is an added benefit which we share with the Johannesburg Fellow community for them to take advantage of. Attending the Hub’s FUN and other special events have been informative and great networking platforms.
